The Susan Hash Literacy Initiative was founded to honor Susan Hash’s lifelong devotion to education and her steadfast belief that literacy is a gateway to opportunity. Inspired by her passion for learning, the initiative is dedicated to expanding access to reading, educational resources, and lifelong learning opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds. Through support for literacy programs, educational enrichment, and community engagement, the initiative seeks to carry forward Susan’s vision of a world where everyone has the tools to learn, grow, and succeed. In doing so, it preserves her legacy of service, compassion, and commitment to empowering others through the transformative power of education.

Susan was passionate about education and literacy, dedicating much of her life to enriching the lives of others. Her professional journey included serving as a Library Assistant at the Sandy and Hoodland Libraries, where she established a tutoring program, coordinated volunteers, and helped connect community members with educational resources. One of her greatest joys was hosting the weekly Story Time at the Hoodland Library in Welches, where she nurtured a love of reading and learning in generations of young children.

The Mt. Hood community held a special place in Susan’s heart. She first fell in love with the area while learning to ski on Mt. Hood at the age of seven and spending time with her family at their cabin on Tawney Lane. Throughout her life, she cherished those memories and longed to return. In 2015, Susan and her husband, Rocky, fulfilled that dream by moving to a 1930s cabin along the Salmon River. There, she embraced the community she loved and continued her dedication to literacy, education, and service through her work and volunteer efforts with the local libraries.
